Box Office 4/24 - 4/27: Sentimental Feeling for a Fallen Star + Action Film = Box Office Champ
Thursday, May 01, 2014
Brick Mansions didn't really take off at the US box office, it only debuted at #5. It was a chick flick starring Cameron Diaz, The Other Woman that dominated the chart over there.
It painted a different story here in Malaysia. While there were a few special screenings of The Other Woman last week in selected TGV cinemas, it actually opens officially this week. I highly doubt it will reach #1 here, chick flicks rarely did. Brick Mansions (my review) did open last week, and with the marketing campaign kept mentioning this is Paul Walker's final film role that he completed before his death (R.I.P.), people are feeling sentimental about it, flocking in to watch this action film (ting ting ting ting... action films, always a hit here). It opened at #1, unsurprisingly.
Elsewhere in the chart, a pair of horror movies opened modestly. The Demon Within opened at #4 while The Quiet Ones at #7. There are quiet a number of horror movies lately the titles are beginning to sound generic and confusing. For example, these two films are so not uniquely titled you can join them together to form one phrase: The Demon Within The Quiet Ones. I think it is a better title, someone please make the film already. It's worth mentioning that another horror flick Oculus is still on the chart, so three horrors altogether, signifying there will always be market for this genre. People like to scare themselves in a dark room.
This coming week, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens, and you can bet it opens big, like really really big. It is the first summer blockbuster this year, with many more to come over the next four or so months. It should be interesting in the US chart since they are more unpredictable there. Over here in Malaysia though, you can bet every big movie newly opens that week will go straight up to #1, no surprise here.
